 DMU

2nd September 1989

Set: L421

Class 117 L421 (51401 + 59511 + 51359) at West Ealing working a Reading to Paddington service on 2-9-89. Ian Cuthbertson Collection.

 DMU

29th November 1989

Set: L120

I believe that the Greenford branch was the last in the London area to use single car DMUs on a diagrammed basis. This picture shows 55020 (L120) taking the switch from the down relief line line to the branch at West Ealing on 29 November 1989. The diminutive vehicle looks a bit dwarfed by the large 1960s office block complete with huge communications dish. Peter Tandy.

 DMU

30th November 1989

Set: L413

The footbridge on the down side of West Ealing station was a popular spot for railway photographers although not always the easiest place to stand on occasions due to one or two dubious characters who used it for peddling illegal substances! I spent most of a day there on 30 November 1989 and took an bagful of pictures including quite a few DMMUs on local trains. This one shows class 117 L413 (51349 + 59501 + 51391) working a Paddington to Slough service away from the station stop. Of interest in the background is the former GWR goods platform shelter now used as a partly-covered storage area. Peter Tandy.

30th November 1989

Set: L122

On 30 November 1989 55022 is seen heading from Greenford to Paddington taken with a 135mm lens as it rounded the curve towards West Ealing station. This unit survived at least until 2014 as DB977873 used for Sandite operations. I'll wager that the Mk3 Ford Cortina alongside the boarded staff crossing in the background didn't last as long! Peter Tandy.

 DMU

10th August 1990

Set: L125

Second version NSE liveried L125 moving away from West Ealing station with a Paddington to Greenford service. 10 August 1990. Alistair Fyffe.

 DMU

1991

Set: L413

Pressed Steel Class 117 L413 in original NSE Livery and with vehicle 51349 leading (presumably with 59501 + 51391). Moving away from the recently re-modelled and refurbished West Ealing station with an early evening service for Maidenhead in 1991. Alistair Fyffe.

 DMU

Set: L129

Class 104 53540 with Class 121 54289 hybrid DMU set L263 approaches Pressed Steel Class 121 'Bubble Car' 55029 near West Ealing station circa 1991. From the late 1980s, a number of imported DMU sets were to be seen working NSE locals out of Paddington. The strangest arrivals were ex-Manchester Class 104s, one of which is seen here making up a hybrid set of BRC&W Class 104 DMBS 53540 and Pressed Steel Class 121 DTS 54289. The unit is about to pass one of the traditional Greenford branch Class 121 'Bubble Cars' 55029. West Ealing station is in the background. Chris McKee.

What happened to railway uniforms? Chris McKee.

 DMU

circa 1991

Set: L840

A very smart looking Metro-Cammell unit freshly repainted into the final NSE livery with black cab window surrounds. West Ealing station had also just been refurbished, complete with fancy tiles and a not too informative clock! The vehicle numbers for set L840 were 53311, 59117 and 53322. Chris McKee.

 DMU

circa 1991

Set: L419

Pressed Steel Class 117 unit L419 heading west through West Ealing station circa 1991. The Class 117 Pressed Steel units had a monopoly of local services out of Paddington for 30 years, from 1959 to 1989. By the time this photo was taken, they were about to be finally replaced by new generation Class 165 Thames Turbo sprinters. A smart looking NSE liveried 3-car unit L419, made up of 51398, 59508 & 51356 is seen passing through the newly refurbished West Ealing station, about 7 miles out of Paddington. Chris McKee.

A three-car Class 101 DMU is seen at West Ealing with an up relief at about 11:00 on 30 June 1991. It seems to be set L841 and so presumably 53332 + 59091 + 53312. Stuart Mackay Collection.

 DMU

31st March 1992

Set: L596

With the position of the sun 'wrong' for an approaching shot, this view was taken from the rear. The front set is number L412 and that nearest the camera is L596. Taken at 17:14, a late afternoon Up service for Paddington on the Relief Line at West Ealing station. 31st March 1992. Presumably Class 119 L596 is formed of 51099 + 59416 + 51076 and Class 117 L412 51347 + 59499 + 51389. Alistair Fyffe.
